Plot summary
The Mormon pioneers led by Elder Wiggs need stock and guides for the journey to the San Juan River in southeastern Utah Territory, where they mean to plant a crop before the winter rains to feed a larger migration that will follow the next spring. Travis Blue and Sandy Owens, young horse traders newly in from Navajo country, sell them the whole string and sign on as wagon master and ramrod. On the trail the company takes in a stranded medicine show, among them the elixir salesman Dr. A. Locksley Hall and Denver. Shiloh Clegg and his clan of robbers and thieves, wanted for a robbery at a store, also fall in with the wagons, hungry and short of water.
