Plot summary
Brandon "Blue" Monroe is sixteen, half Navajo and a gang member from East L.A., serving a sentence for the murder of his abusive stepfather. Dr. Michael Reynolds, a wealthy oncologist, tells him at the yearly medical visit that abdominal cancer gives him very little time. Blue is sure a sacred lake in Arizona can cure him, and that a Navajo healer he knew as a boy, Webster Skyhorse, can take him there. He forces Michael at gunpoint to drive. Michael protests the kidnapping and complains about the dinner for his promotion to head of oncology.

- Composer Maurice Jarre said The Sunchaser was blocked from the Special Jury Prize at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival by jury head Francis Ford Coppola, who disliked Cimino, so the prize went to another film.
- For the scene where a boy calls 911, Michael Cimino dialed 911 himself and handed the phone to the sound guy so the operator's replies could be written down.
- Jack Nitzsche was dropped as composer over creative differences with Cimino and replaced by Maurice Jarre, who was picked because Cimino loved his scores for David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago.
