Biography

Paul Fix was an American character actor who worked largely in Westerns on film and television. He appeared in more than 100 films and dozens of television shows. Born in Dobbs Ferry, New York, he began in local productions in New York and moved to Hollywood by the 1920s. He became John Wayne's acting coach and a featured player in many Wayne films. His screen credits included Lucky Star (1929), The Sea Chase (1955), Giant (1956), The Bad Seed (1956), To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), El Dorado (1966), Night of the Lepus (1972), Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), and Wanda Nevada (1979). He also cowrote the screenplay for Tall in the Saddle. On television, he was Marshal Micah Torrance on The Rifleman from 1958 to 1963 and played Dr. Mark Piper in the second Star Trek pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before.

A change of course
In the 1930s, Paul Fix became a friend of John Wayne. Fix served as Wayne's acting coach and in time showed up as a featured player in a lot of Wayne's movies.
A role that slipped away
In the second Star Trek pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," Paul Fix appeared as Dr. Mark Piper. By the time the first season was filmed, DeForest Kelley's Leonard McCoy had taken over the character.
