Plot summary
Colonel James Langdon and his Confederate soldiers, with their families, have no home left to return to, so they burn the plantation and head for Mexico to serve Emperor Maximilian. Union Colonel John Henry Thomas, his war over as well, takes his men west to round up wild horses for sale south of the border, having refused a lower offer from Army purchasing agents. Thomas' adopted son Blue Boy, a Cherokee, finds tracks left by Mexican bandits, and Thomas rides to warn the Confederate camp. Northerners, Southerners and Cherokee riders who lately fought on opposite sides travel the same road toward Durango.

- During the shoot, John Wayne started picking on Rock Hudson and kept suggesting what he should do on camera; when Hudson began doing the same back, Wayne pointed a finger at him and said 'I like you,' and the two became frequent partners in chess and bridge.
- The film is loosely based on a real Confederate general, Joseph Orville Shelby, who escaped to Mexico after the American Civil War and tried to join Emperor Maximilian I's Imperial Mexican forces.
