Plot summary
Three outlaws, Robert Hightower, Pedro Roca Fuerte and William Kearney, ride into Welcome, Arizona, and rob the town bank. Sheriff Buck Sweet and his men chase them out of town, and a shot puts William's horse down; the three get away on two horses. Sweet holes their water bag, and sets men to watch the railroad water tank at Apache Wells. The outlaws turn north to Terrapin Tanks instead. A sandstorm costs them their horses, and at the tanks the water is gone, the wells blown up by a man who rode off after his stock. In a covered wagon nearby lies his wife, in labor, and she asks the three to stand as godfathers to the son she names Robert William Pedro Hightower.

- John Ford had already filmed Peter B. Kyne's story as the silent Marked Men (1919), now thought lost, and his friend Harry Carey Sr. starred in two earlier adaptations. Ford dedicated 3 Godfathers to Carey, who died in 1947, opening it with stuntman Cliff Lyons silhouetted on Carey's favorite horse, Sonny.
- On the set, John Ford's verbal and physical abuse shocked Harry Carey Jr., but John Wayne told Carey it was Ford's method of coaxing the performances he wanted out of his actors.
