Plot summary
A three-month drive in 1864 brings Mexican cattleman Alvarez Kelly to Virginia with a herd contracted to the Union Army, ten days late. Major Albert Stedman tells him the cattle must go by rail to a plantation south of Richmond, where the widow Charity Warwick lets them graze for one night. When Stedman is called away, Confederate raiders kidnap Kelly and their colonel, Tom Rossiter, takes the Union money paid for the herd. Richmond's besieged soldiers need beef, and Rossiter offers Kelly double the Union contract to bring the cattle in, which Kelly scorns because Confederate currency is worthless. Rossiter keeps a guard on Kelly and names him acting lieutenant colonel so the cattleman can turn soldiers into cowhands, while Kelly remains an unarmed prisoner.
