Plot summary
Martha McCandles runs a massive Texas ranch alongside her sons Jeff, Michael and James in 1909. The Fain Gang attacks the ranch and leaves with her grandson Jacob, known as Little Jake, and a demand for one million dollars. Delegates of the United States Army and of the Texas Rangers offer to carry the box, but Martha sends instead for her estranged husband, Jacob McCandles, generally believed dead and living as a wandering gunfighter. Jake arrives with his dog, then rides out with the strongbox, a mule, packhorses and Sam Sharpnose, his elderly Apache friend. Michael rides home on a motorcycle with word that he has found the kidnappers, and Martha lets him and James set off with the Rangers.
