Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Rio Bravo (1959)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Rio Bravo was made as a response to High Noon, sometimes thought to be an allegory for blacklisting in Hollywood. John Wayne later called High Noon "un-American" and said he did not regret helping run its writer, Carl Foreman, out of the country.
- The ominous "El Degüello" theme is explained in the film as the song played on the orders of General Antonio López de Santa Anna to the Texans holed up in the Alamo, to signify that no quarter would be given to them; the tune was used again in Wayne's The Alamo (1960).
- The 1976 film Assault on Precinct 13, directed by John Carpenter, was inspired by the story and setting of Rio Bravo.
SPOILER
The story was credited to "B.H. McCampbell". According to Todd McCarthy's 1997 biography of Howard Hawks, that was actually Hawks' eldest daughter, Barbara Hawks McCampbell, whose contribution was the idea of using dynamite in the final shootout.
