Plot summary
Mike and Tony Petrakis are a Greek American father and son who dive for sponges in the Gulf off Florida. The Rhys family, Conch fishermen, treat the established fishing grounds as theirs and are ready to use violence and even threaten murder to keep them. Clashes between the two families follow. Arnold and the Rhys brothers rob the Petrakises of a catch, so Mike turns the crew toward the dangerous 12-mile reef. Tony has met Gwyneth Rhys, and the two are drawn to each other.
