Plot summary
General Mitchell, preparing an attack on Chattanooga in April 1862, gives the Union spy James J. Andrews a mission: cross into Confederate territory, hijack a train and destroy bridges and track on the Western and Atlantic Railroad to delay reinforcements. Corporal William Pittenger, William Campbell and other soldiers meet Andrews on a hillside and are told to reach Marietta, Georgia, by April 10. They travel south in small groups, rendezvous at an inn on the Tennessee River, and lose a day to rain. On the morning of April 12 they gather in a Marietta railroad hotel and board a northbound train pulled by the General, which stops at Big Shanty for breakfast. Conductor William A. Fuller is suspicious of the men who boarded with Andrews, but a letter from Brigadier General Beauregard persuades him they are Confederate agents.

- The Western and Atlantic tracks of the 1862 chase were a modernized main line by the 1950s, so Disney moved about 50 miles east to the decrepit but scenic Tallulah Falls Railway, shooting along 35 miles between Franklin, North Carolina and Cornelia, Georgia.
- Disney rented the Inyo from Paramount and the Mason and Lafayette from the B&O Railroad Museum with five Civil War era cars, and built five wooden boxcars specifically so they could be, and were, destroyed during filming.
