Biography

George Coulouris was an English stage and screen actor, best known for his work with Orson Welles. Born in Manchester, he made his stage debut in 1926 in Henry V at the Old Vic. He met Welles in 1936 and became a charter member of the Mercury Theatre, playing Mark Antony in its modern-dress Caesar. He played Walter Parks Thatcher in Citizen Kane (1941), earning a National Board of Review Award shared with Welles. Later films included Between Two Worlds (1944), Mr. Skeffington (1944), Joan of Arc (1948), The Heart of the Matter (1953), Doctor in the House (1954), Papillon (1973) and Murder on the Orient Express (1974). His stage roles included King Lear and Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and he appeared on television in Doctor Who, Danger Man and The Prisoner. He died in 1989.
