Plot summary
A virus has spread across the world that attacks every member of the grass family, wheat, rice and maize among them. Crops fail, and famine and rioting follow in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America. In London, a year into the disaster, architect John Custance decides to take his family north to his brother David's farm, where the valley may still have food. His wife Ann and their teenage daughter Mary come with him, along with Mary's boyfriend Roger Burnham, a scientist. They leave the city as the rioting grows, just ahead of the roadblocks going up, and set out on a journey through a country where order is breaking down.

- The original cut of No Blade of Grass showed three biker men abducting and raping Ann Custance (Jean Wallace) and her 16-year-old daughter Mary (Lynne Frederick, in her film debut); Frederick was only 15 at the time and the use of a body double remains debated.
- Re-releases of No Blade of Grass on VHS trimmed the rape sequence by about a minute and a half, the uncut version appeared on budget-priced DVDs, and in 2011 the Warner Archive Collection released the film with the scene intact.
- The title song "No Blade of Grass", written by Charles Carroll and Louis Nelius, was recorded by Roger Whittaker and released on his 1971 album New World in the Morning, and was covered by American disc jockey Casey Kasem as a spoken-word recording.
