Plot summary
At the Explorers' Club in London, Dr. James Moran describes an Amazon tribe whose magic can raise the dead, and he sets out to find it. In the jungle he watches a young woman consumed by a carnivorous tree, then falls ill with jungle fever. Five years on, the tree stands in his manor house, tended with Tanga, the tribal drummer, and Moran has Susan Curtis, a young English woman, fed to it while he tries to draw a serum from the plant. Police come to question him about her. At a local fun fair, Sally Norton dances in a sideshow until a fight costs her the job; Jack Venner, who has fallen for her, suggests she ask Moran for work, and Moran hires her as help for his housekeeper, Margaret Santor.

- An accidental fire just before shooting began destroyed the film's original carnivorous tree prop, reducing it to cinders; critic John Hamilton wrote that the already tight budget was stretched to breaking point and the prop department had only days to build the unsatisfactory replacement.
- American critic Bill Warren noted that a scene of Dr Moran, played by George Coulouris, stalking a woman through London was shot at night among real crowds, apparently filmed from concealment with Coulouris and Joy Webster, the woman playing his prey, moving through them.
