Plot summary
With London under German air raids, a group of people book passage to the United States. Henry Bergner, an Austrian pianist who has fought in the Résistance, has no exit permit and cannot join them. His wife Ann searches the streets for him and sees a bomb destroy a car carrying passengers bound for the docks. She comes home to find Henry with the gas on and joins him. The pair find themselves aboard an ocean liner wrapped in fog, where Ann recognizes the other travelers as the people killed in the bombing. Scrubby, the steward, asks the couple to keep their deaths from the others, so that each passenger reaches the truth on their own.
