Plot summary
Gustav Mahler and his wife Alma are traveling home to Vienna after his conducting engagements in the United States. Crowds gather at each station to greet him, but he keeps the blinds closed and refuses their speeches and flowers. Also on the train is Max, Alma's lover, who urges her to leave her husband and step off with him a few stops short of Vienna. When one passenger remarks that Mahler's new Ninth Symphony is all about death, and another declares that no composer after Beethoven can write more than nine symphonies, he is upset, suffers a heart attack, and a doctor aboard tends to him.

- When the National Film Finance Corporation pulled its support for Mahler before filming began, producer David Puttnam had to cut the budget from £400,000 to £180,000.
