Plot summary
Fanny Trellis is a famous beauty in 1914 society, surrounded by suitors and devoted to her brother Trippy. She discovers that Trippy has stolen money from the firm of Job Skeffington, his employer, and now faces prosecution. To save him, Fanny sets out to win Skeffington, a man in love with her, and marries him. Trippy, disgusted by the arrangement and by his own prejudice against Skeffington for being Jewish, goes off to fly with the Lafayette Escadrille in World War I. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mr. Skeffington (1944)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- While making Mr. Skeffington, Bette Davis returned to her dressing room to find that the eyewash she used after filming each day's scenes had been poisoned, leaving her screaming in pain. Director Vincent Sherman told detectives that everyone on set would have raised a hand if asked who could have done it.
- Paul Henreid was offered the male lead of Job Skeffington but turned it down, saying he did not think he could be convincing as a man who looked on passively while his wife had affairs.
- Julius Epstein recalled that four or five scripts for the film had never been made, including ones by Edmund Goulding and John Huston. The version made moved the family from English to American and put the title character, who never appeared in the book, on screen.
