Plot summary
As a boy of twelve, Peter Willems was befriended by Captain Tom Lingard, the master of a trading ship. Now accused of stealing from the shipping port operation he managed near Singapore, Willems has lost his post and faces charges, and he turns to Lingard for help. Lingard agrees to restore his reputation and carries him up a channel that is hard to navigate to a trading village on the coast of Batam, where Lingard's son-in-law, Elmer Almayer, runs a trading post for him. Lingard asks Almayer to look after Willems and teach him the trade, then sails away on one of his voyages.
