Plot summary
Harry Scobie is a Catholic police officer in Freetown, Sierra Leone, during the Second World War, where he has served for fifteen years. His marriage to Louise is unhappy, and both of them mourn their only daughter. When the Police Commissioner retires, the post goes to a younger man sent out from the United Kingdom. Louise cannot bear the climate or the other expatriates and asks to sail to South Africa, but the fare is beyond them, so Scobie borrows the money from Yusef, a man suspected of smuggling. Inspecting a Portuguese vessel, the Esperança, he confiscates a letter addressed to Germany and burns it, moved by the captain's plea. Sent up country over a District Commissioner's troubles, he meets survivors of a torpedoed ship, among them Helen Rolt.
