Plot summary
In Poland, the pianist Frédéric Chopin astonishes his teacher, Professor Joseph Elsner. The music publisher Louis Pleyel invites Elsner to bring Chopin to Paris, but Chopin's father cannot afford the trip. Russian authorities are seizing Poles, and Chopin joins secret political activity while continuing to compose with Elsner's help. At Count Wyszynka's banquet he refuses to play for a Russian governor and leaves. Warned of danger, he flees to Paris with Elsner. Pleyel at first turns them away, then hears the Polonaise and agrees to a concert.

- The candelabrum that became Liberace's trademark was inspired by a similar prop in A Song to Remember, the 1945 Chopin film.
- The real breakup of George Sand's relationship with Chopin was for personal reasons completely different from those shown in the film, chiefly Chopin's siding with Sand's estranged daughter against her mother; Sand herself was an outspoken supporter of the Polish national cause.
- The hands seen playing the piano on screen are those of pianist Ervin Nyiregyházi, while the film's piano music was played by José Iturbi, who also orchestrated part of the B minor Sonata for the Mallorca scene.
