John Garfield
Biography
John Garfield was an American actor whose signature roles were brooding, rebellious men from the working class. Born in Manhattan's Lower East Side and raised in poverty, he trained at the American Laboratory Theatre and joined the Group Theatre in the early 1930s. His breakout came with Four Daughters (1938), which won him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and Warner Bros. soon made him a star player, casting him in They Made Me a Criminal (1939). World War II brought patriotic hits such as Air Force (1943) and Destination Tokyo (1943). After the war he starred in The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), Humoresque (1946) and Gentleman's Agreement (1947), and was nominated for Best Actor for Body and Soul (1947). His contract with Warner Bros. ended in 1946 and he started his own production company; he also returned to Broadway in Skipper Next to God and appeared in Clifford Odets's The Big Knife in 1949.
