Plot summary
Nick Blake has been recovering from wartime injuries in an Army hospital in New York. His old crony Al Doyle greets him, and Nick looks up Toni Blackburn, who held money for him while he served. Toni says the money went into a nightclub where she now sings, and Nick collects what she owes him from the club's new owner. He and Al then travel to Los Angeles to see an old friend, Pop Gruber. There another grifter, Doc Ganson, has found a rich mark: Gladys Halvorsen, a millionaire widow. Ganson's plan is for Nick, a ladies' man, to court Gladys and talk her into putting money into a tugboat business that exists only on paper. Nick agrees to take part if he receives two-thirds of the proceeds, which angers Ganson.

- Warner Bros. bought W. R. Burnett's story as a Humphrey Bogart vehicle, but by the time it went ahead Bogart was tied up making The Big Sleep, so John Garfield, just off The Postman Always Rings Twice, was given the lead instead.
- A clause in W. R. Burnett's Warner Bros. contract returned the rights to him when the film was not made in time, so he sold the story to Collier's Magazine in 1943 and to Alfred A. Knopf in 1945, and then Warners bought it back and paid him to write the screenplay.
- When Nobody Lives Forever was first conceived as a Humphrey Bogart picture, Ann Sheridan was set to co-star opposite him.
