Dirk Bogarde
Biography
Dirk Bogarde was an English actor, novelist, and screenwriter who began as a matinee idol before moving into edgier art house roles. Born in West Hampstead, London, he made his West End stage debut in 1939 and then joined the Rank Organization, where The Blue Lamp (1950) and Doctor in the House (1954) established him. He won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role twice, for The Servant (1963) and Darling (1965). His film work included Victim (1961), Accident (1967), Death in Venice (1971), The Night Porter (1974), A Bridge Too Far (1977), and Despair (1978). He also wrote memoirs and novels, beginning with A Postillion Struck by Lightning, and published journalism. France honored him with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1990, and Britain knighted him in 1992.

A role that slipped away
Bogarde spent a year preparing with Rattigan and Asquith for the lead in their planned film Lawrence, but the production was called off just before shooting, a loss he counted among his greatest screen disappointments.
First role
Bogarde's first credited film role was in Esther Waters (1948), where he replaced Stewart Granger, and this led to his contract with the Rank Organisation.
About the name
Under the name "Derek Bogaerde", Bogarde made his London West End theater-acting debut in 1939, appearing in J. B. Priestley's play Cornelius.

Earlier in his career, Bogarde declined the part of Gaston in MGM's Gigi (1958), the role that Louis Jourdan took.

In 1961, Laurence Olivier, the artistic director of the recently founded Chichester Festival Theatre, asked Bogarde to play Hamlet there. Bogarde turned it down because of film commitments and later said he regretted it.
