Plot summary
Ippolita Oderisi is the adult daughter of Massimo Oderisi, a wealthy Rome aristocrat. A car crash at twelve left her unable to walk and killed her mother. Doctors say the paralysis is psychosomatic, rooted in mental trauma rather than physical injury. Since then she has depended on her father and become deeply attached to him. Her distress grows when Massimo begins a relationship with Greta. She goes to her uncle Ascanio, a cardinal at the Vatican, asking for help. He tells her he can do little and suggests a secular parapsychologist, Marcello Sinibaldi.
