Plot summary
In the Spanish Civil War, Luis Denard, a former concert pianist and composer, goes to England as an agent for the Republican government. His assignment is to buy coal for the Republican side or to keep it out of the hands of the Fascist rebels. Rose Cullen is aboard, the daughter of Lord Benditch, who heads the firm Denard has come to bargain with. Fascist agents beat him and rob him on his way to London, but the papers he carries stay hidden in his shoe. At his hotel he asks Else, a young maid, to hide those documents in her stocking.

- Lauren Bacall, in her own autobiography, said she begged not to have to appear in Confidential Agent, her second film role, but she could not break her Warner contract that early.
