Plot summary
In fifteenth-century France, the English occupation has left the country defeated. Joan, a peasant girl, begins at thirteen to hear voices she believes are sent by God, who tell her that she must rescue France and have the Dauphin Charles crowned king. At seventeen she comes to Vaucouleurs and asks Sir Robert de Baudricourt for an escort to meet Charles; he refuses, and the knight Jean de Metz tells her of a prophecy about a maiden from Lorraine in armor who would lead the country's armies. After a further French defeat in March 1429, Sir Robert lets de Metz and the squire Bertrand de Poulengy take her, and at the royal court she picks the disguised Charles out of the crowd. Convinced of her sincerity, he gives her command of the armies, though his advisors doubt her.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The complete 145-minute version of Joan of Arc stayed unseen in the U.S. for about 49 years, because its original soundtrack was believed lost; it was restored in 1998 only after an uncut print turned up in Europe carrying the only known copy of that complete soundtrack.
- Airing the full-length Joan of Arc on Turner Classic Movies on March 13, 2011 marked the first time the complete unedited version had ever been shown on American television.
