Plot summary
London, 1890: a prisoner at Newgate goes to the gallows for murder, convicted on evidence Superintendent George Grodman gathered, though the alibi witness the man named cannot be located. Grodman loses his position and John Buckley takes his place. Arthur Kendall, nephew of the victim in that case, lives near Grodman, as do the artist Victor Emmric and Kendall's political opponent Clive Russell. When Kendall's landlady, Mrs. Benson, cannot wake him, Grodman forces the door and finds Kendall stabbed inside a locked room. Buckley consults a burglar, Barney Cole, about the locks, then arrests Lottie Rawson, a music-hall singer overheard quarreling with Kendall.
