Plot summary
Scott Walters works as an insurance investigator in America. His firm sends him to London to interview Perry Henderson, who runs the diamond house Henderson House, about a policy that leaves Henderson's elderly mother as its only beneficiary. Henderson's cousin Arthur says Perry is diving in the sea off Portuguese East Africa, and Walters objects that the risk would void the policy. Walters takes an interest in Perry's secretary, Marian Taylor, and learns she is engaged to Perry. A newspaper then reports that Perry went overboard from the Nigeria in a storm. Walters calls at Marian's flat and finds her landlady cleaning it; Marian has flown off. He follows her to South Africa and boards the Nigeria, where Marian is a passenger and Pitt, an English salesman, shares his compartment.
