Ingrid Bergman
Biography
Born in Stockholm, Ingrid Bergman was a Swedish actress who began in Swedish and German films before her English-language debut in Intermezzo: A Love Story (1939) made her a star in the United States. She played Ilsa in Casablanca (1942) and earned Academy Award nominations for For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), The Bells of St. Mary's (1945), and Joan of Arc (1948), winning for Gaslight (1944). Alfred Hitchcock directed her in Spellbound (1945), Notorious (1946) and Under Capricorn (1949). After starring in Roberto Rossellini's Stromboli (1950) and Journey to Italy (1954), she returned to Hollywood and won further Academy Awards for Anastasia (1956) and Murder on the Orient Express (1974), with a sixth nomination for Autumn Sonata (1978). She also won a Tony Award for the play Joan of Lorraine and two Primetime Emmy Awards, for The Turn of the Screw (1960) and A Woman Called Golda (1982).

First role
Bergman's first speaking role came in 1935, a small part in Munkbrogreven. She was Elsa, a maid at a seedy hotel, and the leading man, Edvin Adolphson, pursued her.
Getting ready for a role
Bergman took a role written just for her in En kvinnas ansikte (A Woman's Face), her following movie. There she went against her typical parts, playing a burned, bitter woman who lacked sympathy.
