Plot summary
Roy Tucker is a Vietnam war veteran with a marksman's skill, doing time in San Quentin for the death of his wife's first husband, a crime he did not commit. Warden Ditcher brings him together with Marvin Tagge, who speaks for an unnamed organization along with an associate, Ross Pine. Tagge's offer: he arranges an escape and a new life, and Tucker works for the group for a few weeks. Tucker hesitates, and his cellmate Oscar Spiventa warns that he is being lined up as a disposable hitman. Tucker calls the warning paranoia. The prospect of seeing his wife Ellie again outweighs his doubts, and he agrees. Spiventa declines Tucker's invitation to come along, then changes his mind.
