Plot summary
Max Millan, an ex-convict with a temper, and Francis Lionel Delbuchi, a former sailor who is childlike and goes by Lion, meet while drifting along a California road. They decide to go into the car wash business together once they get to Pittsburgh, the city where Max's bank holds the money he has saved. Lion has an errand of his own first. He is heading to Detroit to see the son he has never met and to make amends with the boy's mother, Annie, who received the pay he sent home from the sea. Max agrees to the detour, and along the way they stop to visit Max's sister in Denver.
