Plot summary
Post-Soviet Russia falls into civil war. An ultra-nationalist, Vladimir Radchenko, and his forces seize control of a nuclear missile site in Russia's Far East and threaten nuclear war if they are confronted. The U.S. Navy dispatches the submarine USS Alabama to patrol the region, with orders to strike first should Radchenko fuel the missiles. Captain Frank Ramsey selects Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter, a man with an education in military history and no combat experience, as his executive officer. A galley fire kills the chief mess officer while Ramsey runs a missile drill, and Hunter questions the decision.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Crimson Tide (1995)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Navy objected to the script's mutiny aboard a U.S. naval vessel and refused to assist the production, so the French Navy provided an aircraft carrier and the submarine USS Barbel was used as a dockside prop with a plywood mock-up sail.
- Because the Navy refused to cooperate, the producers could not get footage of a submarine submerging; they waited at Pearl Harbor, then chased the real USS Alabama by boat and helicopter until she submerged to film it.
- Quentin Tarantino wrote uncredited dialogue for Crimson Tide, much of it pop-culture references, after scripting Tony Scott's True Romance; he feuded on set with Denzel Washington over what was called his racist dialogue, and Washington apologized years later.
- The bridge set built for USS Alabama in Crimson Tide was later reused as the bridge of a ship in Independence Day.
- FBI Director Robert S. Mueller often quoted Gene Hackman's Captain Ramsey line "We're here to preserve democracy, not to practice it" in meetings with the FBI's senior leadership.
