Plot summary
Four years after Alain Charnier slipped away from him in New York, New York narcotics detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle is still looking for the drug smuggler. His department sends him to Marseille, where Inspector Henri Barthélémy meets him. Barthélémy has read Doyle's file and dislikes his manners. He also reminds the visiting officer that police from other countries are not allowed to carry firearms in France. Doyle, who speaks no French, goes his own way through the city, shaking off the French officers assigned to keep watch on him. From a restaurant table, Charnier watches Doyle at a beach volleyball match.
