Biography
Jackie Cooper, an American actor and director, started in films as a child extra and joined the Our Gang comedy series in 1929, becoming one of its main young players through 1931. At nine he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for Skippy (1931), the youngest nominee ever in that category. He then moved into adolescent and adult roles, appearing in The Champ (1931), The Bowery (1933), Treasure Island (1934), and Ziegfeld Girl (1941). On television he starred in The People's Choice as Socrates Miller and in the title role of Hennesey, and he played Daily Planet editor Perry White in the Superman films released between 1978 and 1987. He also directed television episodes, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards, and his final film role was Ace Morgan in Surrender (1987).
