Plot summary
Harry Moseby runs a private investigation agency in Los Angeles, work he took up after playing professional football. His wife Ellen has been having an affair. Arlene Iverson, a former actress, hires Harry to find her sixteen-year-old daughter, Delly Grastner, gone two weeks. Arlene's only income is the girl's trust fund, which pays out while Delly lives at home. Harry learns that Delly was last seen around a New Mexico film location, and his search takes him to the Florida Keys, where she is staying with her stepfather, Tom Iverson.

- The house used as James Woods's character Quentin's home belonged to Phil Kaufman, road manager for Gram Parsons when Parsons died, and Kaufman's story later inspired the 2003 film Grand Theft Parsons. The cast and crew were shooting there the day police questioned Kaufman, prompting Arthur Penn to tell Gene Hackman, "Man, we're shooting the wrong movie".
- Night Moves was shot in the fall of 1973 but held back from release until 1975 because Melanie Griffith, in her film debut, was only 16 when her underwater nude scenes were filmed.
- The role of Ellen, which went to Susan Clark, was first offered to Faye Dunaway, who turned it down to star in Chinatown instead. Dunaway had just ended a two-year relationship with Night Moves co-star Harris Yulin.
- Composer Michael Small turned the film's recurring theme into a song with lyrics by Michael Franks, planned as an end-title number for Roberta Flack, but the plan was dropped and Franks recorded "Nightmoves" for his 1976 album The Art of Tea.

Arthur Penn asked Michael Small to work Latin jazz into the score to foreshadow the Florida Keys setting; Small used Latin inflections even in the Los Angeles scenes, and the theme is played on vibraphone with a bossa nova feel and becomes a samba in the final sequence.
