Biography

Christopher Reeve was an American actor, director, and author who found a love of acting as a boy and trained at Cornell University and the Juilliard School. He grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, and first appeared on Broadway in 1976. His career-defining role came as the lead in Superman (1978) and its three follow-ups, performances that earned him a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He chose smaller, character-driven projects afterward, among them Deathtrap (1982), The Bostonians (1984), The Remains of the Day (1993), Somewhere in Time (1980), and Street Smart (1987). On stage he acted in Fifth of July and The Aspern Papers. He later directed the television film In the Gloaming (1997), appeared in a Rear Window remake (1998), and wrote two memoirs. Reeve also won an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and he died in 2004.

  1. Early training

    In 1973, about 2,000 students tried out for 20 spots in Juilliard's freshman class. Only Reeve and Robin Williams made it into Juilliard's Advanced Program.

  2. First role

    In 1978, Reeve played a junior officer in Gray Lady Down, a naval submarine disaster movie that starred Charlton Heston. It was his first part in a Hollywood film.

  3. Getting ready for a role

    Reeve trained for two months under David Prowse, a former British weightlifting champion. The regimen included morning runs, weightlifting and trampoline work, and his 188 lb frame gained 30 lb of muscle.

  4. Behind the camera

    Reeve's first directing job was the HBO film In the Gloaming, which starred Robert Sean Leonard, Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Bridget Fonda and David Strathairn. It got five Emmy nominations, among them Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries or Special.
