Plot summary
Gold prospector Jack McCann has searched alone in the Alaska mountains for fifteen years when a clairvoyant brothel madam named Frieda tells him that a stone he found chose him and will lead him to gold, though she warns the path is grim. He falls through a glacier and finds the gold, and the strike makes him immensely rich. Twenty years later, in 1945, he lives at Eureka, his estate on a Caribbean island he owns, with Helen, his bored, alcoholic wife, and Tracy, his headstrong daughter, who is married to Claude Maillot Van Horn, a philandering French social climber. A crime boss named Mayakofsky sends the mobster Aurelio D'Amato to acquire the island for a casino.

- During the Canadian shoot the cast and crew ran into a major snowstorm, the worst the region had experienced in fifty years, which caused problems for the production, with snowdrifts exceeding three meters and temperatures as low as -40 C.
- The original draft used the real names of the people involved and was cleared by MGM's legal department, despite the fact that Oakes's daughter was still alive at the time. To avoid the potential of legal action, Roeg and Mayersberg opted to use fictional names in later drafts.
- Eureka was a box-office bomb and marked a significant commercial failure for Roeg, grossing a total of $123,572 against its $11 million budget.
- Roeg and screenwriter Paul Mayersberg developed the film over a two-year period, with an extensive screenplay that at one point ran 1,800 pages.
