Plot summary
In 1923, in a small American town on the Mexican border, a married woman is found dead in her bedroom. Her husband, Bryan Talbot, is jealous, grieving and widely disliked. He is convicted of her murder on circumstantial evidence and sentenced to hang, and he fiercely denies it. The presiding judge, Hochstadter, leaves on a fishing trip, so the execution falls to Ben Lewis, a young Mexican-American judge with little experience. Lewis has misgivings about the mandatory sentence, about capital punishment and about whether Talbot is guilty.
