Plot summary
Cattle baron Brandt Ruger leaves his wife Melissa behind for a two-week hunting trip in the company of wealthy friends, and their marriage is strained. The party rides a private train, and Ruger presents the others with new rifles he says are accurate to eight hundred yards. A band of rustlers and thieves led by Frank Calder seizes Melissa, having taken her for a schoolteacher. Calder asks for no ransom; he wants to be taught to read. While the party dines, Ruger learns that his wife has been taken captive, and he tells his friends that they will shoot the kidnappers from a distance.
