Plot summary
A state prison's isolation block erupts while the warden is away. Thirty-five of the most violent convicts stage a riot and take over their section of the block. Cully Briston is serving five years and awaiting parole, and he wants no part of the uprising. He impulsively gets involved, defending a prison guard and shielding him from the men in the block.

- Alan Rudolph, an assistant director on Riot, recalled that the on-set instructions were never to go inside the prison walls without a guard and absolutely no running: real sharpshooters were in the towers, real killers were on the ground, and by the third week the director and star weren't speaking.
- Riot's production used the prison's real warden, Frank A. Eyman, and also a number of real-life prisoners as extras.
- Riot is based on a non-fiction novel by Frank Elli that chronicled an actual riot in an Arizona prison.
