Plot summary
On Krypton, Jor-El sentences General Zod, Ursa and Non to eternal banishment in the Phantom Zone for insurrection and murder. After thirty years, Superman redirects a missile and unknowingly frees them. At the Daily Planet, Lois Lane suspects Clark Kent is Superman and tests him by jumping from a window; he saves her without appearing to act. Lex Luthor escapes prison with Eve Teschmacher and abandons Otis. Luthor and Teschmacher reach the Fortress of Solitude and learn of the danger Zod poses. On the Moon, Zod, Ursa and Non find they have powers under Earth's yellow sun. Perry White sends Clark and Lois to Niagara Falls to pose as newlyweds and investigate a honeymoon suite scam.

- Producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind cut Marlon Brando's completed scenes from Superman II to avoid paying him the reported 11.75% of U.S. box-office gross he was demanding; Richard Donner publicly attacked the decision.
- The Salkinds replaced Richard Donner with Richard Lester on Superman II on March 15, 1979; Donner said he learned of it from a telegram saying his services were no longer needed and that he never heard from them again.
- Gene Hackman declined to return for Richard Lester's Superman II re-shoots out of loyalty to Richard Donner, so a body double and a voice impersonator were used for several scenes.
- Six tons of footage from each Superman film, including much of Donner's "lost" Superman II material, was found by Michael Thau in English vaults during the 2001 DVD restoration.
- The Richard Donner Cut's Niagara Falls hotel-room scene, where Lois shoots blanks at Clark to prove he is Superman, is assembled from Christopher Reeve's screen test with Holly Palance as Lois, so his build, clothing, haircut and eyeglasses change from shot to shot.
- John Williams was flown to England to score Superman II, but after arguing with Richard Lester he told Ilya Salkind he "could not get along with this man," and Ken Thorne was hired to score the sequel instead.
- Christopher Reeve's contract to shoot both Superman films back-to-back had expired when he took the lead in Somewhere in Time, and in March 1979 the Salkinds sued him, alleging he had breached it by walking off Superman II.
