Plot summary

In 4039, the human race is close to extinction, and the survivors of the Neutron Wars live in the City. It is a huge protected construction that can move through space and time, and it keeps ahead of the Jen-Diki, a race of cyborgs that wants to wipe humanity out. Two of its people, the soldier Ballard and the historian Petra, land in the South Australian outback in 1988 to get a landing site ready. Petra is wounded, so Ballard looks for help from Annie Lassite, a geologist.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Time Guardian (1987)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Eight weeks before shooting, Hannant says Hemdale presented him with a re-write of the script by an American writer. He tried to incorporate the changes but says he did not have enough money; John Baxter quit the project and the shoot was cut from 13 weeks to nine.
  • According to director Brian Hannant, the film's $8 million budget was raised in just two days, but $1 million of that total went straight to brokers rather than the production.
  • Director Brian Hannant left the production during post-production, which co-writer John Baxter described as happening "one step ahead of being fired," and some additional scenes ended up being shot by the film's editor instead.
  • For the main role the production envisioned a mature international actor with a reputation in science fiction and action films, the prospectus specifying 'Scott Glenn or equivalent'; the part went instead to the local boyish lad Tom Burlinson.
  • Director Brian Hannant first conceived the film's story after being drawn to the Wilpena Pound rock formation in South Australia while working on Mad Max 2, and used that location as inspiration for the script he wrote with John Baxter.
