Biography

John Phillip Law was an American actor who started on the stage before finding fame in films. Born in Los Angeles, California, he studied psychology and drama at the University of Hawaiʻi after briefly studying engineering. He performed at the Repertory Theater at Lincoln Center in productions such as Tartuffe and The Changeling, then moved to Europe for early film roles. His breakthrough came as a Russian sailor in The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! (1966). He became known for a mix of westerns, fantasy and action, including Death Rides a Horse (1967), Danger: Diabolik (1968), and Barbarella (1968), where he played a blind angel. Other notable films were Von Richthofen and Brown (1971), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973), a worldwide hit that won the first Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film, and The Cassandra Crossing (1976). He continued acting in later decades, with roles in Attack Force Z (1981), Space Mutiny (1988), and CQ (2001).
