Plot summary
Marian Carstairs writes mystery novels and is trying to finish her newest one when gunshots are heard next door. Her three children, Dinah, Archie and April, decide to investigate the killing themselves, or at least to help. An actress named Polly Walker tells Lieutenant Bill Smith that she discovered Flora Sanford's body at the neighbors' house after going there to visit her. Flora was the agent who represented both Polly and Marian, and Marian's books feature a detective who shares Bill's name. The children gather clues around the neighborhood and send anonymous letters to the police, believing they are helping, and they also try to pair their widowed mother with the lieutenant.
