Plot summary
At 31, Martha Alston is single and tired of hearing about it. Her younger sister's wedding brings another round of pressure from her parents, and at the San Diego talk show where she works she turns down Walter, a younger colleague who asks her out. A forgettable Valentine's Day blind date leaves her home in front of the television, then restless enough to go out to a bar, where she drops a quarter by the jukebox. Whitman Crawford crouches at the same machine and chooses the song she wanted. He calls himself a poet and an investor, invites her to his house, and reads her one of his poems. Dating follows, and he wins over her family. Then another side of Whitman shows itself, and Martha cannot make anyone believe her.
