Plot summary
After cholera kills her parents in British India, Mary Lennox crosses the sea to Yorkshire to live at Misselthwaite Manor with her uncle, Archibald Craven, a widower who will not see her. The housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock, escorts her inside and locks her in her room when she asks questions, though she hears crying somewhere in the house at night. Martha, a servant maid, laughs at Mary's orders instead of obeying them, and Martha's brother Dickon, who keeps a raven, tells Mary about a garden locked inside a vine-covered wall, its key buried by Craven. When Mary meets her uncle, he is about to leave for London, and he says the portrait she asks about shows his wife, dead ten years.

- MGM announced The Secret Garden in November 1946 as a vehicle for Claude Jarman Jr., directed by Clarence Brown, but by July 1948 Dean Stockwell had the lead opposite Margaret O'Brien, with Brown producing and Fred M. Wilcox directing.
- The Secret Garden is mostly shot in black-and-white, but the sequences set in the restored garden of the title were filmed in Technicolor, so the garden appears in color.
