Ed Begley
Biography
Ed Begley was an American stage, radio, film and television actor who started out on Broadway and in radio while still a teenager. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he appeared in the musical Going Up in 1917 and later played Charlie Chan and other parts on radio series, before settling into supporting film roles in the late 1940s. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Sweet Bird of Youth (1962), and his other films included 12 Angry Men (1957), Odds Against Tomorrow (1959), The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), Hang 'em High (1968) and Wild in the Streets (1968). On Broadway he took the Tony Award for playing Matthew Harrison Brady in Inherit the Wind, a role he later repeated on television, and he was twice nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards. He died in 1970.

Behind the award
Begley took the role of Matthew Harrison Brady in the 1956 Broadway production of Inherit the Wind. His work in that part earned him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play.

As a teenager, Begley started out acting on Broadway and in radio. In 1917 he was in the musical Going Up on Broadway, and the following year he appeared in it in London.
