Plot summary
Josiah Gray comes to Walesburg soon after the Civil War, a preacher who delivers his first sermon in the saloon. The patrons laugh until he produces two guns, and then they listen. He settles in the town, which builds him a church, and marries Harriet, raising her orphan nephew John. When the beloved Dr. Harris dies, his son takes up the practice in his place, a younger, unreligious man whom Walesburg does not much like, and who wants to leave. He falls in love with Faith Samuels, the schoolteacher, who is reluctant to marry him because he insists on moving away.
