Plot summary
A film company is shooting a western in a small Peruvian village, and Kansas is the stunt coordinator in charge of its horses. When an actor is killed during a stunt, Kansas quits the movie business. He stays behind when the production leaves, settling in Peru with a local woman, thinking he has found paradise. The villagers have watched the company at work and do not understand that the violence being staged around them is faked. They begin making a western of their own, using sticks as cameras and acting out the fights for real, and Kansas is called in to help with the bizarre incident.

- Dennis Hopper's friend, cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky, mocked his first, conventionally told cut and pushed him to edit unconventionally. Hopper destroyed that cut and assembled the disjointed version now known, completing it in spring 1971.
- On the strength of Easy Rider, Universal gave five young filmmakers $1 million each and near-total freedom. The other four projects were The Hired Hand, Taking Off, Silent Running and American Graffiti, by Peter Fonda, Miloš Forman, Douglas Trumbull and George Lucas.
- Screenwriter Stewart Stern said improvisation ruined the film: Hopper set his script aside and improvised with people Stern thought were not up to it, and never shot essential scenes, including the ending.
- After The Last Movie's failure, Hopper did not direct another film until Out of the Blue in 1980.
- Hopper wanted John Wayne and Henry Hathaway to appear in The Last Movie as a homage to The Sons of Katie Elder.
