Plot summary
Jenny Davis, a deaf runaway, comes to San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district to find her brother Steve, an artist. She has the address where he last lived and a postcard from him with a note she has not yet deciphered. Police search for her to send her home. In a coffee shop she meets Stoney, Ben and Elwood, who share a communal house and play in the band Mumblin' Jim; they take her in and hide her. A promoter books the band at the Ballroom. Dave, who left the band and says its pursuit of success is playing games, agrees to help her.

- Producer Dick Clark insisted that the film carry an anti-drug message, saying he had seen children in a hippie commune living in awful squalor.
- Most of the songs in the film and on its soundtrack album were performed by the Storybook, a San Fernando Valley garage band, but the version of "The Pretty Song from Psych-Out" heard in the film was by Strawberry Alarm Clock.
