Biography

Ben Stiller, an American actor, comedian and filmmaker, grew up in New York City as the child of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, both comedians. He began by writing mockumentaries, and his sketch series The Ben Stiller Show brought him a Primetime Emmy Award for its writing. Stardom followed with comedy leads in There's Something About Mary (1998), Meet the Parents (2000), Zoolander (2001), Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) and Tropic Thunder (2008), and he took the lead in Night at the Museum (2006). Madagascar (2005) was his first animated voice role. His dramatic work includes Flirting with Disaster (1996), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) and Greenberg (2010). As a director, he debuted with Reality Bites (1994) and later made The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), the miniseries Escape at Dannemora and the series Severance.

    Ben Stiller was offered a spot as a writer on Saturday Night Live after the show aired his short film The Hustler of Money in 1987.

    In 1989, Stiller was a featured performer and writer on Saturday Night Live, but he departed after four episodes because the show refused to let him make more short films.
